The Evolution and Future of Outsourcing

Outsourcing is a major consideration in the global economy, and is also a highly controversial issue, particularly with regard to the political implication of foreign dependency. Is it a necessity for survival, or a jobs-killer that pads the pockets of corporate suits? This session will take a rational and objective approach to outsourcing and perhaps challenge the conventional wisdom.
Attendees will engage in the following discussion topics:
- The evolution of supply chains through three major eras
- Contrasting the points of view from exporter and importer
- Exploiting core competencies through supply chain integration
- The Make v. Buy analysis
- What lies ahead for outsourcing in the future
Keywords: insourcing, make-or-buy decision, outsourcing
Insourcing – using the firm’s internal resources to provide goods and services.
Make-or-buy decision - the act of deciding whether to produce an item internally or buy it from an outside supplier.
Outsourcing - the process of having suppliers provide goods and services that were previously provided internally.
